Purpose
The Exchange & Engage: Mayors and HIV Prevention program, funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), supports U.S. mayors in HIV prevention efforts to improve their community's health and to influence other leaders nationwide. In cities where HIV disproportionately impacts communities of color, HealthHIV facilitates the active engagement of mayors, their administrations, and municipal leaders on HIV prevention by:

Exchanging information on policies, best practices, and model programs.

Engaging leaders through capacity building to create sustainable community programs.
To achieve this goal, HealthHIV:

Recruits mayors/municipal leaders and educates them on HIV policies, practices, and leadership strategies.

Creates a mechanism for receiving feedback from and assessing the needs of municipalities.

Provides municipalities with capacity building to facilitate the active engagement of leaders.

Supports municipal efforts to monitor and evaluate their HIV prevention programs.
Engaging Mayors
Mayors nationwide are invited to participate in the program through HealthHIV's information exchange. HealthHIV provides mayors with breaking news, key information, and model programs to address HIV in their communities. HealthHIV also connects mayors with their peers to create a network for mayors to engage and learn from each other. HealthHIV offers direct engagement which incorporates capacity building and other resources to support mayoral efforts. Activities include assessing ways in which the mayors can impact HIV prevention and developing a strategic plan. Engagement will include these key stakeholders:

AIDS service organizations (ASOs)

Faith-based organizations
- Healthcare providers
Criteria for Engagement
HealthHIV developed criteria to ensure the selection of a diverse group of cities, including:
- HIV epidemiology
- Current HIV infrastructure
- Geography
- Size
- Form of city government
- State and local statutes and regulation
- Current mayoral efforts related to HIV or health in general
